Summary-
Universities UK report says the proportion of full-time undergraduates living in halls has fallen from 35% to 27% in the same period. students living at home has increased from 12% to 20% over the past 10 years, figures suggest. Since 1998 students have had to pay tuition fees, which have now risen to £3,000 a year. The study shows a slight rise in the number of students from poorer areas going to university - up 1% on 1998/99. The study shows a reduction in the number of students leaving university and finding themselves unemployed, but it stresses that this must be seen in the context of the overall improvement in employment within the UK.
Reaction:
I can understand that students stay at home. To go to college/university is thesedays unbelievably expensive, almost only for the élite! Only youngsters who have a lot of money or parents with money have the chance to study? If you tell me, this is not fair, educations should be for everyone, not just for a small precentage, this is ridiculous!

New exams system to be revealed
Summary
The new national exam to replace Standard Grades is set to be unveiled by the Scottish Government.Children now aged 10 will be the first to sit a raft of new compulsory qualifications designed to test numeracy and literacy. They will be tested in fourth year by a mixture of an exam and assessment. The new exams are linked with changes to the school curriculum which will be fully implemented in some schools from this August - and across Scotland the following year. But teaching leaders have voiced concern about the way the Curriculum for Excellence is being implemented, with almost half of teachers claiming to have little confidence.
Reaction:
This article reminds me to the Dutch system. The Netherlands also had some changes regarding schoolpolice and the ''newlearning''. Everyone was very negative about it, but eventually school system improved..for still there are still dissatisfaction by some teachers! Sometimes it isn't possible to please everyone!

Police also believe the former chef from Cavendish Road, Balham, was responsible for a further 71 attacks on women who were walking alone at night. Reaction:
It is unbelievable that a serial sex attacker walks for such a long time in England. The Police also believe that Reid was responsible for a further 71 attacks on women who were walking alone at night! This man is mentally sick! He has to be in removed from normal society. If you assault so many women, there is something extremely wrong in your mind. In my opinion man such as Reid should get castrated! Guarantee that Reid never assault a women again ;)

The European elections are sort of vague... What are the real changes for the countries and what are the changes for the smaller countries? And is it really for the best that Europe gets more involved in our things in England or in the Netherlands? My opinion is NO.. what's yours.

Hummer gets sold!!
General Motors is to sell its Hummer brand to China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery. GM bought the Hummer brand in 1999. Its sales have suffered as the gas-guzzling performance and military image have become less popular. GM says it hopes the deal will save about 3,000 jobs in the US. Hummer will remain based in the US. GM sells it for an undisclosed amount.
Reaction:
It is smart that they want to sell the Hummer brand, especially if you know that the world economy is shrinking. People are a fraid to lose their job and as result of that people don't buy large purchases. And also for the people who work in that company keep their jobs this way. It's a smart idea of GM!

Al-Qaeda 'kills British hostage
Al-Qaeda 'kills British hostage
Summary-
Mr Dyer and a Swiss tourist were kidnapped in Niger after visiting a festival. A group of al-Qaeda militants kidnapped in Niger in January, but he was being held in Mali. The group had said it would kill Mr Dyer if the British government refused to release radical Muslim cleric Downing Street says there is "strong reason to believe" that a British citizen has been executed by this group.Abu Qatada is awaiting extradition to Jordan, where he was convicted of terrorism offences in his absence and faces life in jail.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mr Brown said: "We have strong reason to believe that a British citizen Edwin Dyer has been murdered by an al-Qaeda cell in Mali.
"I utterly condemn this appalling and barbaric act of terrorism. Mr Brown said: "I want those who would use terror against British citizens to know beyond doubt that we and our allies will pursue them relentlessly, and that they will meet the justice they deserve," he said.
Reaction:
It is very sad that innocent people get killed for nothing and that there are terrorist attacks! The worst thing is that people do this in the name of Islam. Like it is okay, to kill in name of a God! Islam does not say kill innocent people. Islam does not say battle with people who don’t have the same believe, no the islam says life in peace and harmony! The people who think they are doing the right thing for their religion are very ignorant. I would advice them to read the Koran before approving something that islam disapproved!

Schoolgirl arrested for refusing to study with non- English pupils
Schoolgirl arrested for refusing to study with non- English pupils
Summary-
A teenage schoolgirl was arrested by police for racism after refusing to sit with a group of Asian students because some of them did not speak English. The teenager had not been in school the day before due to a hospital appointment and had missed the start of a project, so the teacher allocated her a group to sit with. "She said I had to sit there with five Asian pupils," she told the police. "Only one could speak English, so she had to tell that one what to do so she could explain in their language. Then she sat me with them and said 'Discuss'." She said:"'I'm not being funny, but can I change groups because I can't understand them?' But the teacher started shouting and screaming, saying 'It's racist, you're going to get done by the police'."Codie said she went outside to calm down where another teacher found her and, after speaking to her class teacher, put her in isolation for the rest of the day. Headteacher Dr Antony Edkins said: "An allegation of a serious nature was made concerning a racially motivated remark by one student towards a group of Asian students new to the school and new to the country." Greater Manchester Police denied Codie had been kept in a cell but would not comment further.
Reaction:
I think this is outrages that a 14- year old student gets this enormous treatment by the school and the government! I think this is out of proportion because it is the child her right to tell if she can't discuss with non-English students, it is indeed hard to discuss if they don't understand the language. And it is absolutely wrong to throw the poor girl in jail. Cody will learn nothing of this. She will propably only hate foreigners because of this incident. My conslusion is that the school and the police were overprotected!

Tomato pill 'beats heart disease'
Tomato pill 'beats heart disease'
Summary
Scientists say a natural supplement made from tomatoes, taken daily, can stave off heart disease and strokes.Preliminary trials involving around 150 people with heart disease indicate that Ateronon can reduce the oxidation of harmful fats in the blood to almost zero within eight weeks.
the supplement could be much more effective than statin drugs that are currently used by doctors to treat high cholesterol. However,Professor Peter Weissberg of the British Heart Foundation said: "As always, we caution people to wait for any new drug or modified 'natural' product to be clinically proven to offer benefits before taking it. "It will take some time, and several clinical trials, to provide such evidence.
Reaction:
When I read this I was not suprised that tomatoes have this positive healing effect for the heart I thought in the Islam this type of vegetable was recommended 14centuries ago and is well known in the islamic culture! :)

Summary
Pupils in London are to be taught self defence in school. A national standard safety initiative is being implemented for the first time to counter the targeting of vulnerable young people for possessions such as mobile phones and iPods.
According to the Home Office, 10 to 15-year-olds are the most likely age group to fall victim to personal crime. The programme has already been undertaken in Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton, Reading, Slough, Stevenage, Birmingham, Surrey and Watford. “It gives young people confidence and the fundamentals of how to stay safe. The programme has already been undertaken in Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton, Reading, Slough, Stevenage, Birmingham, Surrey and Watford.
Reaction:
I think this is a good way to protect youngsters these days, to make them aware of the dangerousness in society. It is better to prevent a certain situation than to let pupils be careless and unaware of the rising criminality. So I absolutely applaud this!
